The Lexington Herald Leader has released its preseason poll for Class 5-A. Defending state champion Covington Catholic is first followed by runner up from a year ago Frederick Douglass. Bowling Green is third, South Warren is fifth and Owensboro is sixth. Christian County and Graves County are among teams receiving votes.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored six first-inning runs and never looked back in a 16-2 thrashing of the Cincinnati Reds last night. Reds starter Sonny Gray could only manage to get two outs before being pulled, and Cardinals designated hitter Brad Miller homered twice and drove in seven-runs during the blowout. Ian Happ homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 at PNC Park. The teams play again this evening in Pittsburgh. Right guard Nate Davis and linebacker Derick Robertson had to be carted off the field in Tuesday’s Tennessee Titans' practice. Davis suffered an apparent leg injury, but it was later reported to be cramps and not serious. Robertson had to be helped inside, not putting weight on one leg. No word from the team on the severity of the injuries.
