UK football’s Hughes arrested in Lexington Sunday

University of Kentucky and former McCracken County standout Zy’Aire Hughes was arrested early Sunday morning in Lexington. According to the Fayette County Jail, the 21-year-old Hughes was arrested on Woodland Avenue in Lexington and charged with fourth degree assault. The Lexington Herald Leader reports Hughes allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in an apartment. Murray State dismisses WR Newble

Murray State coach Mitch Stewart announced the dismissal of Corey Newble on Sunday for violation of team rules. WPSD-Paducah reports the Jackson, TN native was arrested early Saturday morning on several drug related charges including trafficking in marijuana, possession of cocaine and trafficking within 1,000 feet of a school. Newble did not play in the 2018 season according to his bio on Murray State’s football website.

South Warren wins Class 5-A Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl

South Warren won its second Class 5-A championship in defeating defending champion Covington Catholic 20-16 Sunday at Kroger Field in Lexington. The win for the Spartans ended a 29 game win streak for Covington Catholic and South Warren was one of two teams to complete the 2018 season undefeated. UK/Vandy receive bowl invitations

Kentucky and Vanderbilt both received invitations to bowl games Sunday.The 14th ranked Wildcats will meet 12th ranked Penn State on New Year’s Day in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. It will be the first meeting of the teams since the 1999 Outback Bowl. Vanderbilt will face Baylor in the Texas Bowl on December 27th in Houston, TX. It will be the Commodores second bowl appearance in three seasons.

Corey Davis caught the go-ahead touchdown pass with 36 seconds left as the Tennessee Titans rallied past the New York Jets 26-22. Louisville native Justin Thomas finished tied for 12th at eight under par at the Hero World Challenge that concluded in the Bahamas Sunday. Jon Rahm at 20 under par was a four shot winner over Tony Finau who finished 16 under and Justin Rose finished third at 15 under par. Tiger Woods finished 17th at one under par.
