Covington Catholic is first in the first Cantrall Rankings of the season from the Lexington Herald Leader. Bowling Green is second with Mayfield tied for ninth and South Warren is 17th in this week’s Top 25. Hopkinsville is fourth in the Class 4-A rankings with Christian County ranked ninth in the Class 5-A rankings.

Cats travel to Florida Saturday

The Kentucky Wildcats get a chance to end a 31-year losing streak to Florida on Saturday in Gainesville. Kentucky hasn't beaten Florida since a 10-3 win back in November, 1986. The Wildcats came close last season, but blew a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter to take a heartbreaking loss. Murray State freshman killed in crash on WK Parkway

A Murray State University student was killed in a motor vehicle accident over the Labor Day weekend. Interim President Bob Jackson said in a campus wide email Monday that freshman, 18-year old Joseph Penington, was a native of Hodgenville. U of L to be without DE Greenard for a while

Louisville will be without defensive end Jonathan Greenard for an extended amount of time as he deals with a wrist injury. Greenard was hurt in Saturday's season opening loss to Alabama. He's a team captain and led Louisville with 15-and-a-half tackles for loss and seven sacks last year. The Cardinals host Indiana State on Saturday.

Titans gearing up for opener with Dolphins

The Tennessee Titans are on the practice field as they prepare for Sunday's season opener at Miami. The Dolphins claimed former Titans quarterback Luke Falk off waivers over the weekend, and could now have an inside scoop against Tennessee. Offensive tackle Jack Conklin returned to practice yesterday after spending all of training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Fire destroys vacant home

Fire destroyed a vacant home in the northwestern part of Christian County Tuesday morning. A call of fire at 20639 Collin Bridge Road came out about 5 a.m. and the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department responded. Sheriff’s Deputy Andy Sanderson said the structure was a total loss and said the home was vacant and for sale. Black bear spotted in south Todd County

After recent sightings in Muhlenberg, Logan and Montgomery counties, it appears there’s a black bear roaming in south Todd County. A photo taken by David Westerman and provided to WHOP Monday by Guthrie Mayor Scott Marshall shows a small black bear in a field reported to be on Gray Farms near US 41 about three miles from Guthrie.
