For the past few years, highway fatalities have been declining in Kentucky, but Governor Andy Beshear says the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is seeing a possible reversal of that trend in 2026.

At last week’s Team Kentucky Update, Beshear shared that highway fatalities have decreased from 814 in 2023 to 664 in 2025, and as of August 19 the transportation cabinet has recorded 422 fatalities in 2026. He says the number of highway fatalities this year is higher than the amount recorded at the same time last year.

Beshear says they have also seen a 10% increase in wrecks that result in serious injuries. To avoid fatal wrecks, Beshear reminded drivers to buckle up, put their phone down and drive sober.

Last, Beshear says folks need to be alert while behind the wheel and drive appropriately. He also cautions against aggressive driving.
