An investigation is underway after a residential explosion rocked a neighborhood in Central City early Tuesday morning.
According to the Central City Fire Department, crews responded to the scene in the 400 block of North Fifth Street around 5 a.m. after what is believed to have been an explosion resulting in numerous fire exposures. Crews were able to contain the fire fairly quickly.
One adult male patient was found with severe burns and significant injuries, sustained in the explosion. He was flown by helicopter to a regional trauma center for treatment of his injuries.
Four additional homes were damaged in the event, with the occupants displaced and receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The Kentucky State Fire Marshall’s Office responded to the scene, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives set to begin an investigation. A large area was taped off to keep the scene secure.
The public is asked to avoid the area, as the scene remains active.
