Big Read featuring “Our Town” gets underway

The sixth Big Read event officially got underway in Hopkinsville Monday evening with a performance and exhibit at the Alhambra Theatre.

The first 100 attendees received a free copy of this year’s reading—“Our Town” by Thornton Wilder.  Martha White says the Big Read is made possible with a grant through the National Endowment for the Arts and will bring weeks of events to the community.

She says this year’s material has themes that reflect back to our own community and how it affects each one of us.

White took time to dedicate this Big Read to Beverly Whitfield, longtime director of the Literacy Council, who recently passed away, in honor of her memory and drive for early learning.

A complete schedule of Big Read events can be located on the Big Read Hopkinsville Facebook page, or copies of the schedule can be found at multiple locations in Hopkinsville.  Attendees Monday evening were able to enjoy a feature starring locals in an adaptation of the play.
