Our oppressive heatwave is set to continue into the weekend, as the National Weather Service in Paducah has extended the Heat Advisory through Sunday.

It’s possible that Heat Advisory could be upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning, as the worst of the heat is set to arrive in the Friday into Sunday period. Heat index values were already expected to hover in the 105-to-110-degree range, but that could even be exceeded over the weekend. With temperatures sticking around in the upper 70’s at night, there’s not much hope for relief from the heat for the next several days.

This type of prolonged heat can affect people of all age groups, regardless of health—so make sure to stay hydrated, drinking more water than you think you might need. If you must be outside, frequently apply sunscreen, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and take regular breaks out of the sun, preferably in air conditioning if possible.

If you can, bring those outdoor pets inside, but if not, make sure they have constant access to fresh water and access to shade that isn’t a doghouse, as the inside of a doghouse can become unbearable.

Never, ever leave a child or a pet alone in a vehicle for any amount of time, and make sure children can’t access a vehicle on their own, as they could become trapped inside.
