The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is warning Kentuckians about an ongoing texts message scam that’s been plaguing the Commonwealth recently.
According to a news release, officials have been receiving continual reports of fraudulent text messages received by residents, where a scammer is impersonating the Office of Highway Safety and individual driver licensing offices, which feature a suspicious link similar to Kentucky government website addresses.
The scam messages act like the customer of unpaid traffic tickets or “traffic infractions” and say that a payment is due and “actions will be taken” if not paid. They then include links to fraudulent websites that greatly resemble legitimate website, tricking the victim into clicking a malicious link.
Officials says you should not click on any links in or respond to the scam messages. KYTC does not collect traffic tickets fees via text messages, and the official KYTC website is drive.ky.gov.
If you’ve been the victim of one of these scams, contact your bank immediately and forward the suspicious message to 7726 (SPAM), which will alert your mobile provider.
