Hopkinsville’s Committee of the Whole voted to designate the L&N Railroad Depot as surplus property to allow an investor to purchase and renovate the building at Thursday’s meeting.
The depot has been a part of Hopkinsville for over a century and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight says everyone loves the depot, but it would cost around $3 million to fully restore it.
Knight wants to see the depot repaired by designating it as surplus property to allow private investors to renovate the interior of the building and establish a business inside.
Knight says he has already talked with interested investors who have ideas of turning the depot into a bakery, a wine shop and an office space.
The council unanimously approved Knight’s recommendation which will be discussed further at a future City Council meeting.
