Candidates for Hopkinsville City Council in Ward 5 meet in debate

The Hopkinsville-Christian County League of Women Voters continued their debate forums Monday evening, and the candidates running for Hopkinsville City Council in Ward 5 squared off.

Incumbent Republican Amy Craig has a challenger in Republican Shannon Trogden, and the two discussed many points of interest, from homelessness to housing, to challenges facing their ward specifically.  Craig says a big issue for Ward 5 is infrastructure, with traffic a daily issue for many citizens that she been working to address for some time now.

Trogden agreed with the traffic issue, saying the ward is growing faster than the infrastructure can keep up with.

As for cleaning up the city, especially concerning dilapidated homes or buildings, Trogden says each structure needs to be handled on a case-by-case bases, to work with the property owners to come to a solution.

Craig says things can get tricky when it comes to code enforcement, but they’ve been working to improve that by shifting code enforcement to the Hopkinsville Fire Department, and if a structure cannot be repaired and is unsafe, then demolition can be considered.

You can view the entirety of this debate and the others that have been held on the Hopkinsville League of Women Voters Facebook page. Craig and Trogden will face off in the May primary election.
