Man charged with attempted murder of police officer following pursuit

A Crofton man is charged with attempted murder of a police officer and several other charges following a high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle Friday afternoon in Christian County.

Christian County Sheriff’s Major Jason Newby says Deputy John Quarles attempted to stop a vehicle he knew to be reported stolen out of Hopkinsville on Old Madisonville Road, but 33-year old Joshua Smith of Crofton allegedly sped up and did not stop.

He allegedly swerved the stolen car toward Lt. Scott Smith, who was standing outside of his cruiser, before running into the vehicle of Sheriff Tyler DeArmond.

Joshua Smith then wrecked out near the southern intersection with Madisonville Road and took off on foot, but was soon caught and arrested.

In addition to attempted murder of a police officer, he’s charged with fleeing or evading police, wanton endangerment, felony receiving stolen property, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and several other counts.
