Threat continues for winter storm, heavy rainfall

The forecast for the potential winter storm in western Kentucky later this week continues to be challenging, as different parts of the region are likely to see heavy rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow at different times.

A winter storm watch remains in effect for Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Caldwell and Lyon counties and areas to the north and west from 6 a.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday and the southern Pennyrile region could be placed under some type of watch, warning or advisory before the event is over.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has scheduled another conference call for Tuesday afternoon to give local emergency managers on the latest forecast.

Making that forecast has been challenging, as when exactly the cold air from the north plunges south will determine when the rain transitions to freezing rain or sleet and how much specific locations get.

The threat for heavy rain and flooding in the usual places is also present, with the weather prediction center placing western Kentucky under a marginal risk for excessive rainfall between Tuesday night and Thursday night.
