An Alabama man was arrested Sunday by the Christian County Sheriff’s Department following a pursuit on I-24.
According to the police report, deputies responded to reports of a possible shoplifter at the Pembroke Minit Mart who had already left the location. A vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s was located heading westbound on I-24 and when deputies attempted a traffic stop the driver, 33-year old William Edwards of Madison, Alabama, who reportedly ignored directions and continued driving. A pursuit continued for several miles on I-24 at about 45 miles per hour before eventually coming to a stop around the 80 mile marker after he allegedly attempted multiple times to swerve around deputies and not stop.
Edwards reportedly had a strong smell of alcohol coming from his person and deputies had to put the vehicle in park themselves. He was placed under arrest and taken to the Christian County Jail.
He was charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police, DUI and careless driving.
