Art Guild to host awards reception for ‘The Things I Carried’ photo exhibit

The Hopkinsville Art Guild is inviting the public to attend an awards reception for area photographers whose work has been selected to be in a traveling photo exhibition as a part of the Big Read in Hopkinsville.

This exhibit titled ‘The Things I Carried’ is sponsored by the Hopkinsville Art Guild, Pennyroyal Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant. The reception is set for 5 p.m., February 5 at the Art Guild on Sixth Street.

This contest was open to all photographers, according to a news release, which says all accepted entries were the original work of artist and completed within the last three years.

There will be awards given for 1st place – $100, 2nd place – $75, and 3rd place – $50.

All images selected for the exhibit reflected the theme of the book The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien.  The book is a collection of short stories about soldiers facing conflict during the Vietnam War.  Entries were reviewed by a judge. Acceptance was based on the photo’s illustration of the theme, composition, technical excellence and creativity. The photo’s impact, creativity, style, composition, presentation, color balance, center of interest, lighting, subject matter and print quality were all reviewed.

The exhibit will be on display from February 6-13 at the Hopkinsville Municipal Center, from February 13-16 at the Art Gallery on Sixth Street, and February 18-26 at the Hopkinsville Community College Library.
