Firefighters are on scene of a large trash fire at the Hopkinsville Landfill on Mt. Zoar-Latham Road Saturday morning.
Hopkinsville Fire Department Lt. Payton Rogers says no buildings are involved in the blaze, and while they’re not sure on the exact size or severity of the fire, they did call for assistance from county volunteer fire departments to bring it under control. Lt. Rogers says they couldn’t do what they need to do without the help of those volunteer fire departments, including Crofton, Highland and Westside.
As of around noon, about half of the fire was covered, as crews used excavators to turn dirt and smother the flames. The Environmental Protection Agency was on scene to do air quality tests.
