The first black man to play at The Masters has passed away. Lee Elder died Sunday at the age of 87. Elder’s death comes less than a year after he was named an honorary starter in golf’s first major of each year. On April 9, 1975 he became the first black to play in The Masters.
He didn’t make the cut but broke barriers. He was also the first black to play in the Ryder Cup-playing for the US in the 1979 event.
