KHSAA changes format for state baseball/softball in 2019

The KHSAA Board of Control met in Lexington today with several topics discussed. One was the future format and site of the State Softball Tournament and the format for the State Baseball Tournament.

A recommendation was proposed to go back to a semi-state round with the eight region winners going on to the state tournament. The semi-state round will be a one game series, not a best of three as it was years ago. The board also indicated it wanted the semi-state games to be played at quality facilities, preferably colleges.

The State Baseball tournament will be played June 5-8 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington with the State Softball tournament going June 6-8 at a site yet to be determined. The tournament had been at Jack Fisher Park in Owensboro since 2004.

In other action, the board denied Aspire Academy’s request for KHSAA membership. Aspire is the boys only basketball program affiliated with Holy Cross High School in Louisville.

The board also approved the schedule for the Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl. The Class A game would be played at 1 pm Central time and the Class 3-A game would be played at 6 pm Central time on Friday, November 30th.

On Saturday, December 1st, the Class 2-A game would begin at noon Central time with the Class 4-A game at 3:30 pm Central and the Class 5-A game would be at 7 pm Central. The Class 6-A game would be on Sunday, December 2nd at 1 pm Central. All games will be played at Kroger Field, Lexington for the second consecutive year.
