Clarksville drowning victim identified

Clarksville Police have identified the man who drowned after jumping into the Cumberland River while fleeing from police Tuesday night.

A news release says 39-year old Eugene Bompers of Clarksville jumped in the water behind Waffle House on Riverside Drive about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

As previously reported, an officer stopped Bompers for driving a vehicle with a taillight out.

Bompers exited his car and ran toward the river and officers recognized him as having multiple warrants for his arrest, including one for aggravated assault.

He attempted to swim across the river, but went into distress and began yelling for help.

Officers encouraged him to swim back toward them and went into the water to help, but they were unable to reach him before he went under and never returned to the surface.

His body was located by search crews about an hour later.
