Funeral procession part 2

Funeral services were held Wednesday for Hopkinsville Police Officer Phillip Meacham.

Fellow officers, firefighters and other first responders from across the region and nation streamed into the parking lot of Christian County High School throughout the morning and the hearse was escorted away by dozens of cruisers with blue lights flashing.

HPD Chief Clayton Sumner spoke to media before the funeral and says Meacham and other officers choose to work in law enforcement, despite the dangers, because they want to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

He says knowing Officer Meacham died doing what he loved makes the loss more bearable.

Chief Sumner says Meacham’s family and coworkers are doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances.

Groups of citizens held flags and paid their respects to Officer Meacham along the funeral procession route in the city and there were other tributes along the route to the graveside service at New Ebenezer Cemetery on Pilot Rock Road.

Officer Meacham, who was only 38-years old, is survived by his wife and young daughter.
