Double-murder suspect Anthony Gaines appeared in Christian County Circuit Court on Wednesday where he was arraigned on additional charges related to an assault incident while in custody.
Gaines is already charged with two counts of murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence and four counts of wanton endangerment for the 2021 shooting deaths of Kierra Wallace and George Gomez.
Gaines was additionally arraigned on two counts of third-degree assault of a corrections officer and four counts of third-degree terroristic threatening. The assault case was originally set to go to trial on Monday, but Gaines’ defense attorney Brandi Jones requested that it be continued due to discovery issues.
Jones says two surveillance cameras may have captured the incident, and she requested to receive screenshots from the cameras to see their field of view. However, Jones says she has not received the screenshots from the Commonwealths Attorney’s Office and claims that the evidence she has received seems to display a clipped version of the events that occurred.
Assistant Commonwealths Attorney Greg Cortese says Jones has already received all the video evidence concerning the incident and he was never ordered to provide her with screenshots he does not have. He says Jones can contact the Christian County Jailer for that evidence.
Circuit Judge Andrew Self set a pretrial conference for August 12 and rescheduled the trial for August 27 and August 28 to give Jones enough time to receive a response from the jailer concerning the evidence.
