The Hopkinsville Fire Department helped set a scary situation back to a calm one Sunday, after responding to an elevator emergency at a local hotel.
According to Hopkinsville Fire and EMS, Battalion 2 responded to the hotel, where it was determined that 12 occupants were trapped on the malfunctioning elevator. After evaluating the options, it was determined the safest option was to manually lower the elevator to the ground floor.
Once lowered all the way, the occupants were able to safely leave the elevator, after being trapped there for over 30 minutes.
The incident was likely caused by being overcapacity, which can strain an elevator’s mechanical systems and cause a shutdown. The elevator was placed ‘out of service’, and no one was injured in the incident.
