School board hears summer maintenance update

The Christian County School Board heard the summer maintenance update report at Thursday’s meeting and approved updates to the KSBA policies.

Even though school is out, the maintenance department has been busy during the summer as they work on cleaning, painting and updating facilities across the district.  Facilities Coordinator Trevor Herndon says one of the big projects that’s currently underway is they are clearing out the old Christian County Middle School to ready it for demolition—he says while many items got thrown away or donated, there’s even more waiting to be made surplus and sold.

He says the building has been sitting empty for some time now, and he says if all goes as planned, it’s his hope the building will be ready to be demolished sometime early next year.

The board approved changes to the Kentucky School Board Association Policy update that adds new language to include protecting students and personnel from discrimination concerning sexual orientation or gender identity.  That language already included race, color, religion, national origin, political affiliation and more.  There was much discussion about where this addition, which was required to be in compliance with law, might lead to in regards to gender identity, but it passed with board member Tiffany Mumford Brame saying that it is their duty as board members to look out for all children, while administrators look at what options and guidelines will need to be set to benefit students.

In other action, the board approved a close out form for the Christian County High School reroofing project and the BG-5 form the Indian Hills roof project, both of which have come in under budget.
