Updated: Kentucky tornado drill postponed

Updated: Kentucky’s tornado drill was postponed due to ongoing flooding elsewhere in the state.

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, Kentucky’s annual tornado drill is set for Wednesday morning.

Christian County native Rick Shanklin is the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Paducah and urges Kentuckians to go through their plan for what to do if there’s an actual tornado at 9:07 a.m. Wednesday.

Most counties and towns will test their tornado sirens, listeners to the radio will hear the activation of the Emergency Alert System and Shanklin says it will also be a time to be sure your NOAA weather radio is functioning properly.

In the event of an actual tornado, you should go to the most interior room in the lowest level of your home or business—a basement if you have one. While tornadoes can happen in Western Kentucky during any month, they are most likely March through June.
