Woman arraigned on arson, attempted murder charges

The Cerulean woman charged with attempted murder and arson for allegedly setting an occupied trailer on fire in May was arraigned Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court.

Public defender Rick Sandborn entered a not guilty plea on behalf of 33-year old Karen Brafman of Cerulean in the courtroom of Judge John Atkins.

According to the initial report from Kentucky State Police, the occupants of a trailer on Princeton Road woke up on May 12th to find their home on fire. There were six people inside, including four children.

Police say there were four points of origin of the blaze and a strong smell of kerosene on the building. A kerosene heater and a fueling syphon allegedly belonging to Brafman was located and determined to be the igniting source.  A wheelbarrow, mulch and a handsaw belonging to Brafman were also discovered.

She had allegedly attempted to stab one of the victims before and was on probation for that offense.

The six counts of attempted murder and one count of arson are being pursued as hate crimes, as the Commonwealth alleges the incident was racially motivated.

Another pre-trial conference was set for August 1st.
