Ward 4 Hopkinsville City Councilman Paul Henson died Sunday after a battle with lung cancer.
The 80-year old Henson announced he was fighting cancer before a September 15 city council meeting, saying a decision to not seek another term was very difficult to make because of how much he loved serving.
Henson served since 2007 and said he was proud of the creation of the Hopkinsville Transit System—a committee he chaired for several years. He got into public service in the late 90’s as part of a committee that would eventually lead to creation of the Hopkinsville Storm Water Utility and said he was proud that Hopkinsville doesn’t flood as often or as severely as it did 25 years ago.
Henson’s death was announced Sunday on Facebook by his son, Tony Henson, who thanked members of the community for their prayers and concerns. He says his father left the family with a “lifetime of love and memories” that they will forever cherish.
Former Mayor Carter Hendricks said Henson “was a good man that cared about our community. He didn’t make disagreements personal and he tried to do the best for the city.”
