Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation hosts annual soap box derby

Although some rain moved through the region, that did not stop the Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation from hosting the 18th annual Hopkinsville Soap Box Derby at Ruff Park and awarding the winners on Saturday.

Annie Catron, president of the foundation, says race day went great and the inclement weather held off while racers had a blast.

Saturday’s derby kicked off at 8 a.m. and featured 35 racers and four racing divisions. The Stock Division includes racers between the ages of 7 and 9, the Super Stock Division includes racers between the ages of 10 to 12, the Master’s Divison includes racers age 13 or older and the Super Kids Divison includes racers with special needs partnering with more experienced racers.

In the Stock Division, Willow Graves won first place, Karter Richarson won second place and Tyriek Merritt won third place. In the Super Stock Divison, Madalyn Warren won first place, Nate Crosby won second place and Charles Cayce won third place.

In the Master’s Division, Audrey Rains won first place, Adelyn Cook won second place and Will Rader won third place. Lastly, in the Super Kids Division, Aldon Odoms won first place, Jeremiah Hopes won second place, Elijah Hale won third place and Liam Byrun won fourth place.

Catron says the first-place winners from each division will compete at the international soap box derby tournament in Akron, Ohio in July.

Catron says the foundation is accepting donations to support the racers going to the international tournament as well as for next year’s race.
