Legislature could consider marijuana, sports betting bills

Legalizing marijuana in some form and the legalization of sports gambling are brought up every session of the Kentucky General Assembly and the fate of both of those issues remains unknown this session.

There are bills in both chambers to legalize the sale or use of cannabis and Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says he could support legalizing marijuana for legit medical purposes.

Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville isn’t sure any type of marijuana bill will move in the House and says he’ll have to review the legislation carefully before he decides whether he supports it.

Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County wants to see the final version of a medical marijuana bill that’s yet to be heard in a House committee, but has no reservations about saying he is opposed to any expansion of gambling in Kentucky, adding the commonwealth should tax the gaming industry more if a bill does pass.
