The Henderson Gleaner reports former University of Kentucky All American and former Oakland Raider Rodger Bird died Saturday morning at age 76. The Henderson resident was an all purpose back for Coach Charlie Bradshaw’s Wildcat teams from 1963-65, He rushed for 21 touchdowns and caught four touchdown passes in his Wildcat career. The Corbin native played two seasons for the Oakland Raiders before shoulder injuries cut short his career. He retired from football in 1968.

Former Kentucky First Lady and television sportscaster Phyllis George died Saturday at the age of 70. George won the Miss America title in 1971 and became the first woman to work on a network sports show as she was a co host on CBS’ “The NFL Today”. She married former Kentucky governor John Y. Brown Jr. in 1979 and had two children, Pamela and Lincoln, before the two divorced in 1998.

The 145th ⁄Stakes, which was scheduled to have run Saturday, has been rescheduled to October 3rd due to the pandemic. Horse racing’s second jewel of the Triple Crown will run about a month after the Kentucky Derby which is set for September 5th at Churchill Downs.

NASCAR returns to action today for the first time since March as the Monster Energy Cup series races without fans at Darlington Speedway. Brad Keslowski is on the poll.

Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson meet Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff today at Seminole Golf Club in Florida in the TaylorMade Driving Relief Skins game. The money raised will go to Covina-19 relief efforts. The match airs on NBC at 1 pm Central time.
