Soldiers from Fort Campbell are headed south to assist in securing the border with Mexico in what is being called ‘Operation Faithful Patriot.’
The Department of Defense announced Monday that more than 5,000 active-duty personnel are deploying to aid the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to harden the southern border.
Officials said 800 soldiers—from Fort Campbell and Fort Knox—were already on their way.
They will join nearly 2,100 national guardsmen in support of law enforcement with Customs and Border Protection.
The action comes in response to a migrant caravan attempting to cross into the United States via the Mexican border—though that group is still several weeks away from reaching the border.
