District 3 Magistrate candidates meet in debate

Incumbent District 3 Magistrate Democrat Mark Cansler faced off with his opponent for the November election, Republican George Barnett at Monday’s League of Women Voters’ debate.

The two debated many issues, including infrastructure in both the city and county, broadband internet access in the county, and both men said they would be willing to consider a different meeting time for Christian Fiscal Court meetings so more of the public could attend.

Barnett says the function of county government that needs additional resources is the Christian County Sheriff’s Department, as a safe community is a high priority.

Cansler says if he had the opportunity of extra funding, he would like to instate programs at the Christian County Jail to help people get back on their feet and out of the cycle of crime.

Barnett says he would not support a library tax to support the library, though he does support the library and the work its doing in the community. Cansler says he would like to see revenue increase through growth and not increase taxes or instate one.
