Details released in fatal North Drive crash

The Hopkinsville Police Department has released details on a fatal crash that occurred on North Drive early Sunday morning.

According to the collision report, a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Walter Wilson of Hopkinsville was stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of West Seventh Street and North Drive, where he had apparently fallen asleep behind the wheel.  A passerby reportedly woke him up, which is when Wilson allegedly sped off, approaching the bridge on North Drive near the Greenway System trailhead.

That when the vehicle went airborne, striking an embankment and going over a natural gas pipeline, before falling off the rail and hitting the embankment on the opposite side of the river before rolling into the water.

Officers and fire fighters were able to stabilize the vehicle, but Wilson was found deceased inside and declared so by the Christian County Coroner.
