Annual soap box derby set to take over Ruff Park

Hopkinsville’s annual soap box derby is coming back for its 18th year and Annie Catron from the Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation appeared on WHOP to share what they have in store for the community this weekend.

The Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation is a newly formed nonprofit and this is the organization’s first year hosting the derby.

The Hopkinsville Soap Box Derby is set to take over Ruff Park on Friday and Saturday. On Friday racers will be doing practice runs in the evening and the foundation will host a cook-out for racers and their families.

Catron says the Super Kids Race is also set for Friday along with something new that will get parents more involved. Parents whose children are racing will have the chance to race against them in the soap box cars.

The official race kicks-off on Saturday morning and Catron says this year they have 37 racers competing and she encourages the community to come and cheer them on.

Catron also invites parents with children who may be interested in racing to attend so they can see what the soap box derby is all about and possibly be a racer next year.

Saturday’s race kicks-off at 8 a.m. and the winner will go on to race at the 86th Annual International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. More information about this year’s soap box derby can be found at Hopkinsville Soapbox Derby on Facebook.
