Princess Theater suspected shooters undergo arraignment for new charges

After initially being indicted for charges of handgun possession by a convicted felon and first-degree attempted assault, Jaquavian Spencer and Zamarius Humphries have now been charged with complicity to murder and complicity to assault.

Spencer and Humphries were arraigned for the new superseding charges on Tuesday in Christian Circuit Court.

Spencer and Humphries are suspects in a 2021 shooting that happened after a party at the Princess Theater. The pair allegedly shot toward one another leaving Humphries with a gunshot wound to the neck.

However, the pair’s altercation allegedly led to the death of one bystander and the injury of another. In response to the shooting, Deovion Day allegedly began shooting, killing Aniyah Collins and wounding Gteria Acree.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen says the decision for the renewed charges came after she spoke with the lead investigator of the case and found the connection between the shootings.

The pair’s Defense Attorney, Sands Chewning says the Commonwealth has had yet to provide the defense with discovery regarding the shooting’s connection to the Day case and that the cases should not be connected.

Circuit Judge Andrew Self questioned Bolen regarding the timeliness of the superseding charges since Spencer was originally set for a jury trial on Thursday. Bolen says she has just recently gotten the information about the connection between the Spencer’s, Humphries’ and Day’s cases.

One piece of evidence Bolen says connects the cases is a Snapchat video by Spencer where he allegedly talked about what happened in his incident with Humphries, and Day’s alleged shooting response.

With the new connection, Bolen says she would like to try Day’s, Spencer’s and Humphries’ cases all together since they stem from the same incident. However Self accepted Chewning’s motion to keep the cases separate from Day’s case.

As a result of the superseding charges and the defense’s lack of discovery, Self says Spencer’s case will not go to trial on Thursday.

Instead, September 11 and October 5 have been designated as trial dates for Spencer and Humphries. It has not been determined if the pair will go to trial together or independently.
