Man transferred to Vanderbilt hospital with gunshot wound to arm

Hopkinsville police say a man leading an officer on a foot pursuit Saturday night shot himself in the arm.

An officer stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation just after 11 p.m. near South Virginia and Short 19th Street and the incident report says the suspect got out of the car and fled on foot.

When he hopped a nearby fence, police say he fired a 9 mm pistol, with one round striking him in the arm.

Sgt. Samantha Rodriguez says the pursuing officer took cover after hearing the gunshot and police soon located the suspect and transported him to Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

She says investigators were able to follow a blood trail to locate the discarded handgun and that the suspect claimed someone was shooting at him while he was running.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was later transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville due to blood loss, according to Sgt. Rodriguez.

The suspect could be facing several charges following treatment, including fleeing or evading police, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence and falsely reporting an incident.
