Progress continues to restore power after historic number of outages Friday

Crews have been working around the clock since Friday’s severe weather and historic winds to restore power as quickly as possible, but thousands of local residents still remain in the dark this morning.

Hopkinsville Electric System General Manager Jeff Hurd said they were down to 400 members in the dark last night and said it would be tonight or sometime tomorrow before everyone is back on.

Brent Gilkey with Pennyrile Electric says they have reduced the number of members without power from over 25,000 at the peak on Friday to about 11,600 this morning.

He says the outage numbers Friday were historic, rivaling the total from the 2009 ice storm.

Gilkey says they’ve been working to get the largest outages addressed as quickly as possible.

Pennyrile had to look outside of Kentucky for mutual aid, as most of Kentucky had outages from the winds that gusted up to and above 70 mph.
