The Christian County grand jury will soon hear the attempted rape and kidnapping charges against the man accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman on the night of August 26 on the Hopkinsville Greenway.
Hopkinsville Police Officer Jeremy Crawford testified 52-year old Anthony McCoggle of Hopkinsville had been walking with the victim at about 11:30 p.m. on the bridge that leads from the trail to the park on West Ninth Street when he allegedly forced her to take her clothes off and attempted to sexually assault her.
The victim reportedly told police she met McCoggle for the first time that night at another location in Hopkinsville and they had smoked marijuana together. District Judge Lindsey Adams shut down attorney Michael Cotthoff’s questioning when he asked if it was possible the victim and suspect had been involved in a potential drug deal.
The victim told police that McCoggle threatened to kill her if she didn’t comply and warned her against reporting the incident to police. Officers responded after dispatch got a 911 call from McCoggle’s phone and heard her yelling “he’s going to kill me.”
Judge Adams determined there was probable cause for the case to be heard by a grand jury for possible indictment.
McCoggle was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree rape, kidnapping of an adult and intimidating a participant in a legal process.
