A preliminary hearing was held in Christian District Court Monday afternoon for DaShayla Day, the former daycare worker charged with criminal child abuse in connection with an incident at the First Baptist Church daycare.
Day appeared alongside defense attorney David Rye and Hopkinsville Police Detective Jason Sears, who testified to the investigation that led to charges being filed against Day. Sears says they were notified by the 16-month-old child’s guardians about the alleged abuse and pulled video surveillance footage, which reportedly showed her lifting the child by one arm to carry out of a classroom into a hallway, and then ‘firmly grabbing the child by the face’.
Detective Sears says the child was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center later for treatment, and had visible injuries.
He says Day has been cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation. District Judge Foster Cotthoff determined there was probable cause and sent the case to the grand jury for consideration of indictment.
Day is charged with one count of first-degree criminal abuse.
