A mural painted by local young artists to promote awareness and prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence was unveiled at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library Monday afternoon.
The project was led by Hopkinsville-Christian County Youth Leadership in a partnership with Sanctuary, Inc. and the art department at Christian County High School.
Hopkinsville Mayor Wendell Lynch and Judge-Executive Steve Tribble officially proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and Sanctuary Executive Director Heather Lancaster says the mural featuring a butterfly with the words unafraid, courage, strength and bravery exemplifies a message that would make the world a better place, if taken to heart.
Carly Chaudoin with Youth Leadership says the group wanted to create a visual representation of Sanctuary’s mission, as they protect victims of domestic violence and their children in the nine-county region.
Lancaster noted that Sanctuary, and the mural, also promotes their Green Dot program—which encourages agencies and organizations in the region to reach out for education on how they can help prevent violence.
