Christian County Public Schools is offering ways for the community to help families—locally and across western Kentucky—who were affected by the tornadoes over the weekend.
Superintendent Chris Bentzel says anyone wanting to donate goods to Christian County residents who lost their homes can drop those items off at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary this week and those victims can go to the school to pick up items they need.
The district is sending bus loads of supplies to give to residents of Mayfield, Dawson Springs and elsewhere in western Kentucky and those items can be dropped off at the Gateway Academy.
Pembroke Elementary is the only school building that that sustained storm damage and Bentzel says a restoration company is already on scene to begin the repair process.
The majority of the damage is to the front of the school where the front office is located.
Power has been restored to South Christian Elementary, but the phone and internet service was still intermittent as of Monday morning.
Bentzel says a combination of approximately 20 to 25 students, faculty and staff in the school system had damage to their homes and many more had family here or elsewhere who needed their support following the severe weather.
