Anshanique Leavell, the woman found guilty in the fatal shooting death of Amareya’ Freeman following trial in August, was formally sentenced in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.
A jury found Leavell guilty of murder, three counts of receiving stolen property and tampering with physical evidence for her role in the June, 2019 death of Freeman. That jury recommended a 28-year prison sentence, with the charges on each count to run consecutively, but defense attorney Michael Thompson requested that the judge make those to run concurrent instead.
Judge John Atkins denied that request and upheld the jury’s recommendation.
Thompson informed the court it is likely they will file an appeal—Leavell will become eligible for parole after serving 20 years of her sentence.
