Man sought on Tennessee warrant arrested by HPD, charged with assaulting local officer

A man sought on a Tennessee warrant for assault with a gun was arrested following a disturbance Monday afternoon in Hopkinsville.

Hopkinsville police officers were notified of a disturbance on Big Blue Court and made a traffic stop on a vehicle involved a few minutes later at Brickyard Plaza on North Drive.

A computer check determined that a passenger, 29-year old Anthony Gaines of Hopkinsville, was sought on the Tennessee warrant. He was also a party in the disturbance, according to police, who say a search of his person revealed a ring box containing a baggie of methamphetamine.

An arrest citation says Gaines tried to get away, refused to get inside the cruiser and bit an officer on the leg.

He was arrested as a fugitive from another state and for third-degree assault of a police officer, second-degree fleeing or evading police, possession of meth and resisting arrest.

Gaines was evaluated at Jennie Stuart Medical Center before being transported to jail after telling officers that he needed an ambulance because has a pacemaker and that he needed fluids. He also complained of pain to his head.

Chief Clayton Sumner sent out a statement addressing concerns from the public on social media about how Gaines was treated during the incident.

Chief Sumner laid out a timeline in a Facebook post along with a body cam video of the interaction with Gaines and police that lasts just over 40 minutes. The chief says the “officers involved handled themselves professionally and followed the law, policy and procedures.”
