The Houston Astros- Washington Nationals spring training opener on Saturday just got a bit more interesting, with Washington’s Max Scherzer getting the pitching start against the team found guilty of sign-stealing its way to the 2017 World Series title. Scherzer got the start in the last meaningful baseball game – the Nationals’ Game 7 win over the Astros to capture the 2019 World Series.
NFL
Adrian Peterson will return for a 14th NFL season after the Washington Redskins exercised his 2020 option. Peterson, who turns 35 in March, had team highs of 898 rushing yards and five touchdown runs last season for a Washington team that finished 3-13. He currently ranks fifth on the all-time rushing list with 14,216 yards – less than 1,100 from Barry Sanders.
NASCAR
There hasn’t still been any details regarding what injuries Ryan Newman sustained during the crash of his car in the finish of the Daytona 500 nor when he may resume racing again. Roush Fenway Racing did announce that Ross Chastain will drive Newman’s No. 6 Ford for this weekend’s Cup Series race in Las Vegas. Newman was released from a Daytona Beach hospital Wednesday.
Tennis
Roger Federer will miss the French Open after undergoing surgery on his right knee. The 20-time Grand Slam winner is expected to return to action during the grass-court portion of the season before Wimbledon starts on June 29.
