Recovery continues from tornadoes both recent and from two years ago

As communities in Todd County and middle Tennessee begin the work of slowly recovering from tornadoes that impacted those areas Saturday, two years since December 10 tornadoes fell exactly one day later.

While severe weather caused havoc in parts of the state, Governor Andy Beshear was in Mayfield for a memorial walk, remembering the lives lost in the tornadoes two years ago. He says he can still remember the feeling of when he first saw the devastation in the morning light.

Governor Beshear joined local officials and nonprofit leaders to hand over the keys to 10 new homes in Mayfield and Dawson Springs. He says he’s with these communities, and any others who need it, for the long haul.

The Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund contributed $1 million to support these homes, $100,000 per home. While in Mayfield, Gov. Beshear also participated in the city’s Walk of Remembrance, in memory of the 81 Kentuckians lost in the storms.

Blessedly, no lives were lost in Kentucky during Saturday’s event, but six people were killed in middle Tennessee, including three in Clarksville.  As of Monday morning, power had been fully restored to Todd County and all state and county roads were back open to traffic. No one was reported injured in Todd.

Recovery will likely continue for some time into the future for Clarksville and Montgomery County, which saw heavy damages in north side of the city.
