Hopkinsville City Councilman charged with suspected DUI

The City of Hopkinsville has released a statement after City Councilman Matthew Handy was arrested on an alleged DUI charge early Saturday morning following a crash while returning from Clarksville.

According to a news release, the Ward 12 councilman was involved in a single-vehicle accident and then arrested by the Christian County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was not injured, and no one else was involved in the accident.

Officials say they are investigating the incident further and are working with the city attorney to determine the next steps, though they want to assure the public that transparency and accountability will guide their response.

Mayor J.R. Knight says, “We hold our public officials to a high standard of conduct, and this incident is deeply concerning. The safety and well-being of our of our residents is paramount, and such behavior will not be tolerated. Simultaneously, though, we want to make sure that Councilman Handy receives the help and treatment he needs and will be assisting to ensure he does.”
