Mayor Knight talks code enforcement, homelessness in Hopkinsville

Code enforcement and addressing the issue of homelessness in the city is next on the agenda for Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight.

Appearing on WHOP Friday morning, the mayor says he remains dedicated to cleaning up the city, which means that code enforcement will become more prevalent. Mayor Knight says the responsibility of enforcing codes—such as high grass, trash collection, dilapidated housing and more—will soon move from Community Development Services to the Hopkinsville Fire Department.

He says a big focus has been on abandoned and run down buildings, as they present a hazard to the community in more ways than one.

Homelessness is a real issue in Hopkinsville, and Mayor Knight says he’s meeting with local officials and other city governments on what might be the best way to address it, for both the community and homeless individuals.

Mayor Knight says new officials, such as newly appointed City Clerk Brittany Bryum, have hit the ground running and have stepped up to the challenge.
