Todd Co. unveils historical marker honoring first Amish settlement in the county

Last week, Todd County unveiled a new Kentucky Historical Marker—the twelfth such marker in the county—honoring the first Amish settlement in Todd County.

According to an article penned by Carolyn Wells, the new marker is located about a quarter of a mile south of the Penchem Tack Store at 8360 Guthrie Road and celebrates the year 1958, when the first Amish settlement came to Todd County, resulting in the Guthrie settlement of New Order Amish becoming the first Amish settlement not only in Todd County but in Kentucky as well.

That farmland is still being used by the Amish community today.  At the unveiling, representative from the North District Amish Church Bishop Daniel Beachy says, “We are not living in the past; we are here in the present, looking forward to the future and helping not only Todd County but Kentucky as well.”

Magistrate Billy Bryant stated, “Those of us who have lived here for some time realize the Amish community has been an integral part of our county’s diversity. Today the Amish community continues to be devoted to God and their families, and they are also recognized as trusted neighbors and businessmen who continue to make a huge impact on the economy and lifestyle of Todd County.”
