MLB Update 5-30-2023

>>Marcus Stroman Throws One-Hitter To Beat Rays

(Chicago, IL)  — The Cubs edged the Rays 1-0 at Wrigley Field behind an impressive performance by their star pitcher.  Marcus Stroman threw a complete game shutout and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.  Wander Franco hit a single, which stayed as Tampa’s only hit in the game.  Stroman hit a batter and struck out eight to earn his fifth win of the season.  Mike Tauchman provided all the offense for Chicago with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.  The Cubs improved to 23-and-30 and are fourth in the NL Central.  The Rays are still first in the AL East at 39-and-17.

>>Astros’ Lance McCullers Suffers Setback In Return From Injury

(Houston, TX)  — The Houston Astros are going to be without a member of their starting rotation for a while longer.  Lance McCullers Jr. has suffered a setback in his return from a muscle strain in his forearm and is no longer throwing off the mound.  The right-hander is back to throwing on flat ground after participating in bullpen sessions earlier this month.  Houston manager Dusty Baker said that the team has “to take it slow with Lance until we know that he’s 100 percent.”  The 29-year-old has not pitched in a game this season after starting just eight games in 2022.

>>Report: Padres Claim Catcher Gary Sanchez

(San Diego, CA)  — Another MLB team is taking a chance on Gary Sanchez.  The Athletic reports the San Diego Padres have claimed the catcher off waivers.  Sanchez was designated for assignment by the Mets last week after playing just three games with New York.  The 30-year-old had one RBI through seven plate appearances.  Sanchez had started the season with the San Francisco Giants, but was granted his release after failing to make the major league roster by start of May.  He batted .164 with eight RBI in 16 games with Triple-A Sacramento.

>>Cardinals Get Blanked By Royals

(St. Louis, MO)  — The Cardinals almost came out on the wrong side of a perfect game during a 7-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium.  The Cardinals didn’t get a runner on base until the bottom of the eighth, when Nolan Arenado hit a lead-off single.  St. Louis finished the game with just two hits, and Adam Wainwright was charged with his first loss of the season after surrendering three runs in five innings.  The Cardinals remain in last place in the NL Central at 24-and-32.  They send Miles Mikolas to the mound against Kansas City tonight.

>>Reds At Red Sox Tonight

(Boston, MA)  — The Reds are in Boston to open a three-game series against the Red Sox tonight.  The team is coming off a series sweep of the Cubs and sits third in the NL Central at 24-and-29.  Ben Lively gets the start tonight while Boston counters with Brayan Bello.
