Sinkhole near should of I-24 causes lane restriction in Lyon County

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has restricted Interstate 24 eastbound traffic to one lane at the 41 mile-marker in Lyon County where a sinkhole has developed just off the shoulder area of the roadway.

As a precaution, all of eastbound traffic on I-24 is being moved to the left-hand or passing lane at the site.

The sinkhole is along the right of way near the edge of the shoulder.  Officials say engineers are in the process of evaluating the extent of the sinkhole.

It is likely the lane restriction for eastbound traffic will be in place until Monday or Tuesday to allow engineers time to develop a repair plan and deliver equipment to the site.

This lane restriction is along I-24 eastbound just east of the U.S. 62 Eddyville-Kuttawa Exit 40 interchange.

Eastbound motorists on I-24 should be alert for slowing and merging traffic as they approach the 41 mile marker.

This section of Interstate 24 also carries Interstate 69 traffic.
