April declared Fair Housing Month locally

April is Fair Housing Month across the country, but Hopkinsville and Christian County proclaimed it so Thursday morning with a ceremony at the Municipal Building.

The efforts to make sure fair housing is available to everyone, no matter their race, sex or class, has been ongoing in the nation for decades, and the work continues still. Nichelle Hillis with the Human Rights Commission Board says she wants to see the narrative been tenant and landlord change for the better, particularly concerning Section 8 housing.

Salvation Army Lt. Lindsey Galabeas says housing is a fundamental human right and their organization is constantly working to make sure people have a safe place to live.

Laura Faulkner with Community Development Services says the City of Hopkinsville has numerous programs already in place to help with fair housing—which is important, as over 50 percent of the population in the city are renters.

A proclamation was read by Mayor J.R. Knight and Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam declaring it Fair Housing Month.
