HCA defeating Grace Christian Academy 75-17 on Friday night is not all that much of a story. We have established that the Warriors, while they have not quite arrived in KHSAA play, are well beyond most of their brethren in the KCAC.
The story is Jason Leek setting a record for single game assists, and doing so to help Carlos Robles not just set a single game scoring record, but become the all-time leading scorer at HCA.
Robles was thirty-nine points shy of the al-time mark entering Friday night, and Head Coach Matt McGowan felt he might have a chance to break it if the Warriors played their best.
He set Leek up at the top of the HCA 1-2-1-1 press and 1-3-1 zone and just let him distribute as Robles made sure to be in the right position to take advantage.
Forty-Four points later, Robles sits atop the all-time leader board with several games to go and all but put that record, along with the single game scoring record, out of reach for the foreseeable future.
Not to mention Leek assisting on most of those baskets, twenty made shots by Robles, means the assists record sits well out of reach of most anyone except maybe Leek himself who is only a Sophomore.
Again, beating Grace is a win and a win is always nice. However, Friday night was a night Robles, Leek, their friends and family, and really anyone in attendance will never forget.
